EIGHT THINGS YOU NEED IN YOUR HURRICANE SUPPLY KIT

Post Date:June 15, 2017 2:19 p.m.

If you haven’t heard, June 1 marked the first day of the 2017 hurricane season. So, it's time to refresh your hurricane plan... part of that plan is a well stocked disaster supply kit. DISCLAIMER: All of this information can be found in the parish's 'Be Prepared' hurricane brochure here.

Here are eight things you definitely need in your kit:

1. Water. According to the multiple agencies and officials, you will need one gallon per person per day, for two weeks.

2. Non-Perishable Food. We all love to eat fresh, but in this situation, those fresh foods will go bad. Canned foods are the way to go! Pack a two week supply of ready-to-eat canned fruits and veggies, meats, soups and juices but dont forget about other assorted items like crackers, peanut butter, energy bars and vitamins.

3. Clothing. Fashion is not the priority here. Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear per person. TIP: I would pack rain wear, work boots, as well as sunglasses, hats and gloves.

4. First Aid Supplies. It is possible you might need more than a bandaid. Antiseptics and pain relievers are highly recommended. We have a handy list here.

5. Tools and Emergency Supplies. Momma always said, "don’t get yourself caught in a rain storm without an umbrella," well the same applies to a hurricane but you will need more than an umbrella... in fact, you will need a host of items. The full list is available here.

6. Special Items. If you have infants, you’re going to need diapers and other items. If an elderly person is traveling with you, you might need a two week supply of prescriptions. Start thinking about these items now.

7. Entertainment. No one wants to be stuck in a small space with nothing to do. Bring different forms of entertainment (books, games, etc.). Be thinking about children.

8. Important Family Documents. You know the drill. Passports, birth certificates, social security cards and multiple forms of payment. We have a full list available here if you need it.

Most importantly, be sure to store all of these items in a waterproof container or your packing efforts will have been wasted. Packing for your pets? We've got you covered here
